Monopolies Duopoly and Oligopolies in Australia-Free-Samples
Question: Discuss about the Monopolies, Duopoly and Oligopoly in Australia. Answer: Introduction Depending on the presence of number of buyers and sellers in the market, different form of market exists in the economy. Other than perfectly competitive market, all other forms of market are known as imperfectly competitive market. In every form of imperfectly competitive market, sellers enjoy some market power. The extent of market power varies depending on the specific form of market. In the paper, prevalence of imperfectly competitive market in Australia is examined. Like any other nation, there is a long held monopoly structure in the telecommunication industry in Australia. Telstra is the monopolist in market. However, with increasing competition from a close rival, Singtel-Optus the structure is becoming a duopoly one. A recent article published on the possibility of having a duopoly structure in phone and internet market is reviewed. Essence of the story In Australia, there are duopoly structures in the supermarket and airline business. Woolworth and Coles are the two-duopoly players in the supermarkets. In Airline Qantas and Virgin Australia are running the duopoly business. The next segment in the Australian economy that is going to experience a duopoly structure is the telecommunication sector. The chief executive of Optus their marketing strategy and corresponding market share as published in the The Sydney Moring Herald (Ramli, 2017). The other large telecom companies include Vodafone Hutchison, TPG telecom and one or more others. They are also trying hard to increase their market share but Singtel- Optus alone left all these competitors behind. TPG telecom has overtaken iiNET increase its strength in the telecom industry but this does not make any major difference I the composition of telecom industry. Telstra has successful in retaining its market share because of providing customers a reliable network connection high quality bandwidth. Market data reveals that customers in telecom industry value network quality more than the price. Many of Vodafone subscribers has switched from Vodafone to Telstra or Optus because of poor quality interrupted services. Optus thus attempts to increase their quality of services in addition to serving their customers with cheaper service. Optus is quite success full in offering a satisfactory phone and internet service. More than 60 percent internet subscriber now opt either Telstra or Optus service. In case of mobile industry, the percentage is even higher. 80% people in Australia services of either of the two large players (Bragg Christian, 2017). Economic theories and concept Oligopoly An oligopoly market is characterized as having numerous buyers and a few sellers. Rivals follow the strategies of each other to increase their market share. Sellers in the market often face a kinked demand curve for their products (Whitehead, 2014). The kinked demand curve has two types of elasticity in its two parts. In the inelastic part a price war is observed among the sellers top undercut the market share of each other. Figure 1: Oligopoly Market with Kinked demand curve (Source: As created by Author) The kinked demand curve is ABC as shown in above figure. Equilibrium point is E as obtained from the profit maximizing condition, Marginal Revenue (MR) = Marginal Cost (MC) (Fershtman de Zeeuw, 2013). Rival sellers in the market reduce their price below the equilibrium. Once one firm do that other also do the same and this triggers a price war in the market. In the telecommunication industry, few large players are Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, TPG. Each offers attractive prices to the customers to increase its own market share by undercutting others. Among them Telstra acquires the largest market share (Shahiduzzaman Alam, 2014) Duopoly The oligopoly structure in the market transforms to a duopoly structure when two large firms serve all buyers in the market. As there are only two firms in the market, market concentration is greater in duopoly as compare to oligopoly (Shepherd, 2014). The monopolist position of Telstra is likely to be threatened with the rise in share of Optus. Monopoly A Monopoly is a market structure dominated by a single seller. Among all the forms of imperfectly competitive market monopoly market is the one where seller enjoys most advantageous position. The monopolist is completely able to supply a very low quantity at a very high price grabbing the entire surplus in the market (Mahanty, 2014). The monopolist often goes for price discrimination to increase the surplus enjoyed. Figure 2: Market with monopoly seller (Source: as created by Author) The figure above describes a monopoly market. Given complet5e control over price and quantity it is possible for the monopolist to enjoy an economic profit even in the long-run in contrast to a competitive market (Holian, 2014). The shaded region shows the prospective economic profit in the monopoly market. Recommendation Transport and communication are two important pillars of economic growth. Hence, development of these two sectors is important. There is no doubt that Telstra is doing best in providing its customers a steady mobile and internet service. However, the quality is often undermined by its high cost. Customers having medium to low affordability often look for a comparatively cheaper network connection. This is one factor responsible for recent undercut of Telstras market share. Thus, Telstra should consider revising its price to retain its market share. Optus on the other hand, should work on improving the quality of its services. By offering cheaper package plan Optus though successful in increasing the number of its customers there are still some question on the reliability of the network service. Once Optus overcome the barriers of quality it will come at par with Telstra. Conclusion The evaluation of the articles reaches to the conclusion that telecom industry in Australia has received another big player, Singtel-Optus. With this the monopoly structure or otherwise monopoly structure will be reduced to a duopoly one. This benefits the Australian customers by providing them another reliable yet comparatively cheaper service provider. Previously they have only one choice for having a quality choice. With efforts made by Optus in improving its services, there is high chance of breaking the monopoly of Telstra. Some recommendations have been made for both Telstra and Optus, which can benefit concerned company and customers in general. References Bragg, J., Christian, R. Employee Commitment on Organizational Performance â⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Employee Commitment on Organizational Performance. Answer: Introduction: In an organisation, the effective communication plays an important role as the manager has to coordinate all the functions and employees which involves liaison. This role of manager not only requires the communication with the internal organisation but also to external environment which includes stakeholders (Yukl, 2013). Manager should include formal and informal communication in its channel so that easy transmission of information should be there. Development of personnel is a tedious task for manager as all the personnel comes from different backgrounds, following different beliefs, having different cultures and acceptability. There is always adoption of one common way so that each and every individual can follow, implement and learn. Setting up of the organisational goals by manager, shows the results which manager wants to achieve in the future course of time. Setting objectives and goals can be made easy when organisation is following the decentralisation; all the decisions can be taken without waiting for the approval by the top level heads (Alfes, Truss, Soane, Rees and Gatenby, 2013). Manager has to support the performance of individuals by giving them directions how to implement the task and achieve best results out of that. By proper communicating and coordinate the activities, manager can easily manage maintain the relation between internal and external environment (Cascio, 2018). Improving process and quality includes trained the new technologies and updating to employees on the job. Development of employees will lead to improvement in process and quality of products and proper vision by the manager should be there. Functions of Manager: Planning is nothing but a gap between where the company is standing today and where manager want that company to reach. All the decisions related to expansion, diversification and other activities are taken by the manager in planning decision. Company plans in advance what activities they have to do, how they will do it and who will going to perform that activity in the organisation. Organising refers to the arrangement of resources and assignment of duties to the employees and establishing authority relationship among them (Child, 2015). Organising includes all the allocation of work or tasks and resources to the employees for implementation of work. Staffing includes recruitment, selection, training and development of personnel and giving them adequate remuneration. This function performed by manager for the right selection of employees at right time for performing the task in the organisation. After following all these above functions, manager gives the direction to the employees how to implement the activity in real in the organisation for achievement of goals. Directing involves supervision over employees working, motivating them and communicating all the important information (Fayol, 2016). After all the resources are put in place, managers work yet not complete as he has to do the correcting work. This work includes measuring the differences in expected and actual results and if the results are not matching to the expectations then corrective measures were taken by the manager. Challenges and risks: Maintain the quality as well as quality in the time when prices are at its peak. Challenge for manager is to provide a good amount of quantity with good quality standards of product (Murray-Webster, and Hillson, 2016). Manager has to maintain the balance between the quantity and quality of the product in that particular cost only. Timely converting the goals or objectives into results is a job of manager. Manager has to complete the task with efficient utilisation of resources and within the time sanctioned. Updating the technology timely is a challenging task for a manager. Implementing new technology in a new organisation depicts employees smartness and ability to understand new changes done in the organisation. In a recent interview of Coca Cola Amantil, manager has accepted the fact that they are facing the problem in managing the risk and finding the new banks for the deposit of money. This is because of the reason that the credit rating companies has pushed the rating of company to the downside (Global Capital, 2012). The environment in which the business is operating is keeps on changing day to day. The manager has to work in that complicated environment and have to face the changes on daily basis. In the market there are always availability of new opportunities and threats the manager has to find that by scanning the business environment (Reason, 2016). Customers choices and preferences are changing very frequently. Now customer prefers to have more of health conscious drinks. Although Coca-Cola is offering a wide variety of products for diet conscious and health conscious customer but then also there is a high competition in the market as close substitutes are available like Pepsi. Impact of values, ethics and diversity on culture and role of manager: Values are just the fundamental beliefs of an individual and the principle of doing the right and justice within organisation and should have to follow the organisation prescribed values. The relationship between the employee performance and organisational values plays a significant role in the organisation for the employee satisfaction (Hannington, 2016). These values include optimum utilisation of resources, doing work with innovation and creativity, coordination with the employees, communication about information and grievances and showing integrity and loyalty towards the organisation. The value of the companies governs the policies, procedures, strategies and appraisals for the company. Values also affect the products offered by the company as it includes how the product will sale and to be offer to public. Ethics are the beliefs of an individual that governs their moral values, honesty, integrity, confidentiality and justice. Business ethics is a field in which cod of conduct of business has been followed by seeing corporate responsibility and taking social and legal factors in mind. Mostly businesses do the ethical advertisement of their product to have good brand image of product and Company in the minds of customers (Sacconi, 2012). Company tries to charge a price which is relevant as customers are price sensitive to this factor. If a company offers a product advantages and disadvantages with full transparency then this activity is considered to be an ethical. In Coca-Cola Amatil, the ethics and code of conduct of business in the organisation has been already defined that how individuals have to perform a role or activity in an ethical manner. This code of conduct includes honesty and integrity in the working of employees and these workings are transparent to the stakeholders. Coca-Cola is following the concept of providing the good quality products to the consumer. Decisions by individuals are made with justice, fairness and impartiality. Following ethics is important in every organisation as it increases the confidence in consumer that company is ethical in nature and its activities and does not provide any adulterated products (Thiel, Bagdasarov, Harkrider, Johnson and Mumford, 2012). It also increases the corporate goodwill of the company by ethical behaviour in society and can also reduce their financial liabilities. Diversity of culture is nothing but an individual values, norms and tradition which they follow and judge, interact, percept others on that basis. It is difference in the caste, sex, religion; culture and social abilities of an individual (Hofhuis, van der Zee, and Otten, 2012). Implementing diversity in the organisation is difficult as it include all individuals from different backgrounds and having different beliefs and influencing individuals to together come up with the same norms, policies and rules and beliefs cannot be done in a one stroke (Patrick and Kumar, 2012). So implementing a diversity culture adoption is a long way activity which managers have to perform. Coca-Cola also facing the diversity challenge as it has a wide geographical reach so it has to maintain the rules according to that only. The company has facing many problems because of diversification in culture like company is spending a high cost for maintaining the diversity. Company is providing training and mentoring regarding the diversity in culture throughout the branches in world (Irefin, and Mechanic, 2014). Coca-Cola is trying to maintain the work life balance possible for individuals. Some employees are also file suit on the company on the ground of discrimination on the basis of race or diversity. From the above discussion, we can conclude that the coca cola is a leading brand in the soft drink field. To manage this leading position, organisational structure is an essential component in the organisation and managing the structure is the work of manager. Manager is responsible for managing the structure effectively and efficiently while communicating and coordinating with all the related aspects affecting the organisation. Conclusion: In todays competitive environment, manager has to perform complex task and are facing many challenges in risk in operating the organisations working. Financial risk, dealing in dynamic environment, changes in consumer preferences all are working as a barrier for efficient working of a manager. Manager has to survive in the environment while following the rules and policies made by the organisation and also have to perform the activities according to the norms, values and in an ethical manner. Performing the activities in an ethical manner and coordinating with the diversified culture is also done by managers. Values, ethics are made in organisation for maintaining the same rules and regulations for all the employees and to have a corporate goodwill. For having an ethical and value image in the eyes of public, the company also do the CSR activities. Company can also use other methods for having an ethical image in the eyes of consumer like company can introduce a campaign, or can do t he promotional activities. What does the novel have to say about the relationship between parents and their children Essay Example
What does the novel have to say about the relationship between parents and their children Paper In 1861 during the epoch of the Industrial Revolution, George Eliot (real name: Mary Anne Evans), wrote the renowned novel ââ¬ËSilas Marnerââ¬â¢. The novel deeply explores the nature of relationship between parent and child, portrayed by many characters in the book. I believe the main reason Eliot wrote ââ¬ËSilas Marnerââ¬â¢ was because in the Victorian period, writers tried to entertain their readers whilst also embedding their beliefs and judgements into the readerââ¬â¢s mind, which comes across very clearly in the book. There are many Victorian values in the novel which are evident in the text, and some very different, some quite complicated, relationships in the novel, which reveal the complexity behind each inter-related connection between parents and children. ââ¬Å"A child, more than all other gifts, that Earth can offer to a declining man, brings hope with it, and forward-looking thoughts. â⬠This quote by Wordsworth portrays the whole meaning of the book, with several connections to different parts of the novel. Wordsworth had the idea that at the moment of birth, human beings move from a perfect, idealised world to a corrupt and faulty world. Children are closest to this early world and can remember the serenity and purity of it, but Wordsworth said that as they grew up, they lose that connection to the natural world. He believed that children can evoke and reawaken these memories of childhood in adults and bring them closer to the early and perfect world. Eliot had this quote in mind when writing a story of a child resurrecting the humanity and hope in a man submerged in isolation and spiritual desolation. The clever use of language devices include omniscient third person narration, in which it gives an overview of both plots with Eliotââ¬â¢s opinions planted in the text. This use of narration reveals Silas as a solitary outsider, who worked at his trade in the backward looking village of Raveloe ââ¬Å"quite an hourââ¬â¢s journey on horseback from any turnpike. However, after his betrayal in Lantern Yard, his self alienation from the villagers of Raveloe and the death of his humanity after the theft of his gold hoard, Silas is resurrected by Eppie, the child that enters his cottage whilst he is in a fit. Eppie is his salvation and brings those forward looking thoughts and he becomes alive once again. Eliotââ¬â¢s own life is quite evidently expressed in ââ¬ËSilas Marnerââ¬â¢, through characters such as Silas. She was born in 1819 at the same time as Queen Victoria, in the period of the Industrial Revolution where powerful influential woman and female literary figures were also active. Her life was a constant whirlwind ââ¬â her mother died in 1836, and Eliot went on to meet Charles Bray who was a radical and free thinker, which led to Eliot rethinking her Christian faith and losing it. In 1849 her father died, and she went to the 142 Strand in London lodging there as a journalist, where she started an affair with John Chapman. This was controversial and went against moral Victorian values, as Chapman had a wife and a mistress living with him. After being sent back to Coventry and writing more reviews for intellectuals, philosophers, and thinkers, she planned to marry Herbert Spencer but it didnââ¬â¢t happen. She then fell in love with George Lewis who was married but believed in free love and open marriage, and with his encouragement and her determination to be taken seriously by distancing herself from frivolous books written by females, her career took off. However, she experienced separation from a rigid Christian society, and her family and brother who she adored rejected her which was heartbreaking for Eliot. Eliot went on to write about the rural life she remembered from childhood in Warwickshire about fond memories, the simplicity of living, and the honest approach to life, which went against the strict Christian society. This lifestyle of going against the normal can be grasped from the life of Silas in ââ¬ËSilas Marnerââ¬â¢. Silas was a part of the growing and rigid Christian society, but after his betrayal in Lantern Yard after being falsely accused of stealing, he moved to Raveloe and lost this faith. Although Raveloe was undoubtedly a simpler and free living village, people still went to church and Silas didnââ¬â¢t want to be a part of this over fear of the same thing happening again. He experienced self alienation and separation from society, where he kept himself to himself. However, the introduction of Eppie into his life made him rethink his faith once again, and subsequently he followed the Christian way of life because of Eppie. Silas Marner vividly encapsulates the Victorian agony of rejecting faith, and the parent ââ¬â child relationship between him and Eppie strengthens these values. Silas is a solitary character who lives ââ¬Å"in a stone cottage that stood out among the nutty hedgerows near the village of Raveloeâ⬠. This suggests that he lives far from the other villagers in Raveloe, who regard him with suspicion because of his cataleptic fits, which they believe derive from the devil. Back in Lantern Yard his fits are considered a sign of righteousness, however in Raveloe, ââ¬Å"his trances look more like visitations of Satan. â⬠This shows the role of religion in Raveloe, as they follow God and appear extremely superstitious. The villagers associate his medical knowledge with the devil occult, but they tolerate him in their village because his job as a weaver is useful. We learn that Silas works for no purpose, it simply fills his time and he hoards the profits and does nothing with it. He spends as little on himself as possible in order to let his gold hoard grow. The constant weaving and solitude ââ¬Å"reduced his life to the unquestioning activity of a spinning insectâ⬠, which suggests that his lifestyle never changed as he was constantly spinning cloth. Silas chooses to block out his past because itââ¬â¢s too painful to even think about for him, the fact that he was betrayed by his best friend made him rethink his faith and lose trust in religion and people. Raveloe is a completely different place to Lantern Yard in terms of what it means to Silas. Lantern Yard was a conservative and peaceful place, where everyone was focused on strict religious values and a simple, frugal life. Raveloe is the opposite ââ¬â it has a laid back feel with degenerate and laid back inhabitants, who have plenty to spare and are materialistic rather than finding happiness in the simple things. Squire Cass is then introduced as ââ¬Å"the greatest man in Raveloeâ⬠, who everybody respects and nobody would ever accuse of doing wrong. The squire is totally absorbed in his own life and petty criticisms. His two sons, Godfrey and Dunstan, are prime examples of the faults in the way their father brought them up. Squire Cass has the attitude that money can solve everything, and that you donââ¬â¢t need to discipline your children or take responsibility for anything ââ¬â as long as you have financial security your family will be perfect in everybody elseââ¬â¢s eyes. His wife died a long time ago, and she was the one who was ââ¬Å"the fountain of wholesome loveâ⬠, whereas Squire Cass seems to lose interest in them very quickly. Squire Cass is an extremely bad role model to his sons, which is later expressed in the book. For example, Squire never disciplined Dunstan and as a result he died trying to pay back rent money he owed to his father in a reckless way. Squire Cass failed as a father because there is no trust in the relationship between Dunstan and Godfrey and their father. They feel they cannot tell him about how Dunstan lost the rent money because of fear of what heââ¬â¢d do. Furthermore, Godfrey is scared to tell him of his affair with Molly, because he is afraid his father will disown him and he is accused of being ââ¬Å"weak like his motherâ⬠. Squire Cass takes credit for anything good that his sons do, but as soon as they make a mistake he threatens to disown them. Like both Marner and the Cassââ¬â¢ lives, it is filled with artificial pleasures. Silas has happiness from his gold hoard, Dunstan likes the difficulties he can cause for others, and Godfrey is content with the idyllic vision of his future with Nancy. Dunstan, who can get Godfrey to do whatever he wants through blackmail and temptation about Godfreyââ¬â¢s secret affair, sets off to sell Wildfire, Godfreyââ¬â¢s horse in order to get back the rent money. Dunstan has a superficial reality over the power he has. He may have an influential and persuasive hold over Godfrey, but in the place of the village he has no real power. However, after sealing the deal but then falling of Wildfire and killing him, Dunstan searches for another way to get the money back. His mind is fixed on the thought of Marnerââ¬â¢s gold, as it had been village gossip that he had a lot of money hidden somewhere. He adopts the attitude ofâ⬠why borrow Marnerââ¬â¢s money when you can just take itâ⬠, which he has learnt from his father. He walks into the inviting cottage and ââ¬Å"his eyes travelled eagerly over the floor, where the bricks, distinct in the fire light, were discernible under the sprinkling of sand. â⬠This suggests Dunstan is keen to find the money and quickly get out of there, and he doesnââ¬â¢t mind doing a corrupt act if it means getting to Godfrey. When he lifts the brick from the floor up and steals the money, he steps back out into the darkness, never to be seen again. Eliotââ¬â¢s style of writing in this fast paced chapter captures Dunstanââ¬â¢s inner voice, as his phrases, words and beliefs are embedded into the third person narration. Dunstan has this attitude that nothing matters as long as heââ¬â¢s happy and he doesnââ¬â¢t seem to care if anybody else gets hurt by his actions ââ¬â this is derived from his own fatherââ¬â¢s behaviour. Marner has this idea that as his life is so repetitive, nothing out of the ordinary could happen because of this daily cycle. However when he goes to count his money and finds it missing, his human form seems to die and he frantically panics. His only reassurance is his own reality, and so he reluctantly starts weaving monotonously once again. Marner is traumatised by his loss, as it is all he believed he had to live for and now that artificial and dormant hope had gone. He treated the loss of his gold like a person would treat the loss of their child ââ¬â he was deeply upset and became even more of a recluse. Silas is reduced to having to ask the villagers help catch the thief, which is a novel idea to him, however they soon sympathise with him and it creates community bonds as such. Later on, Dolly Winthrop introduces the idea of children as she ââ¬Å"stroked Aaronââ¬â¢s brown head, and thought it must do Master Marner good to see a ââ¬Ëpictur of a child. But Marner, on the other side of the hearth, saw the neat featured rosy face as a mere dim, round, with two dark spots in it. â⬠This suggests that Dolly believes Aaron is an example of a picturesque child, but Silas simply sees an empty rosy cheeked face with dark eyes. This is how Silas sees children before Eppie came into his life. It shows that he seems to have no time for children and is not accustomed to the love, happiness and pride they can bring to the adults. Molly Farren is introduced fully, but it is clear she does not look after Eppie and is not capable too because of her opium addiction. She decided to go back to Raveloe to tell everyone of Godfreyââ¬â¢s unfaithfulness and lack of care for her and his child. She blames Godfrey for everything bad in her life, although some of it is down to ââ¬Å"the demon opium to which she was enslaved. â⬠This suggests Molly is tied to opium, she embezzles Godfreyââ¬â¢s money all her life to support her drug addiction rather than to support her child. Godfrey thinks his own daughter Eppie is a liability, and Molly uses Eppie to manipulate and get to Godfrey (playing with his mind. She purposely takes her into the snow with her to go to the Squireââ¬â¢s party with the soul intent to make a fool of Godfrey. She happily died and showed no struggle to survive or grasp Eppie. Eppie sees the bright lights of Marnerââ¬â¢s house, and she walks in whilst he was in a trance. When Silas comes around, he believes Eppie is his gold coins that have been returned. Eppie becomes his salvation and that moment, his soul is regenerat ed and Silas is redeemed for his actions. Eppie starts crying for ââ¬Ëmammyââ¬â¢, and Silas follows the footsteps to discover Mollyââ¬â¢s dead body ââ¬â so he rushes to the Squireââ¬â¢s party for a doctor. When the Squireââ¬â¢s party is notified, Godfrey becomes alarmed that if Molly doesnââ¬â¢t die, she will reveal all about his secret double life. He thinks he might have to care for Eppie which will ruin his chances with Nancy. Godfrey hopes Molly dies so his affair doesnââ¬â¢t come to light, and as he thinks money can solve everything, he gives Silas some money to buy the child some clothes, seemingly out of the goodness of his own heart. This shows the parent-child relationship between Godfrey and his father Squire ââ¬â he is avoiding the responsibility of his child and using money to make everything okay like his father always has done. Godfrey values his own selfish happiness over his fatherly responsibility which is exactly what Squire Cass did ââ¬â the relationship between them has moved down the generations and progressed. Eppie replaces Silasââ¬â¢ love of money with his love of Eppie ââ¬â she is his salvation. Its a lone thing-and Im a lone thing. My moneys gone, I dont know where-and this is come from I dont know where. I know nothing-Im partly mazed. This shows why Marner wants to keep Eppie, he has no idea how his gold was taken and now he has no idea how Eppie has appeared, but he is amazed at the chance and Eppie seems to be his last chance. He learns to love Eppie as she is happy and reminds him of his former self (just like Wordsworthââ¬â¢s quote. ) When people try to take Eppie away Silas begs to look after her as her mother is dead and her father is unknown ââ¬â he cares for her greatly and gives her the name Eppie. Silas learns to adapt quickly to children considering his isolation from others for 15 years. The second Eppie walks into his life and actually needs Silas, his humanity is redeemed. Although Eppie has low expectations of Silas because her mother never touched or talked to her (this shows the level of neglect), Silas has a natural protectiveness instinctively and vows to never hurt her and he puts her before himself. Gold is a symbol of rare, expensive, high quality, precious, material wealth, which represents importance and value ââ¬â and Eppie symbolises all of these things. Silas becomes popular in the village and accepted because of his loving attitude to Eppie. The villagers are more sympathetic, especially women, who doubt how we will cope. Silas is very protective of Eppie, stating ââ¬Å"sheââ¬â¢ll be my little un, sheââ¬â¢ll be nobody elseââ¬â¢sâ⬠. This is because Silas is afraid that Eppie will love someone else more than she loves him. Eliot wonderfully contrasts the gold and the child, stating that gold is deaf, dumb and blind to life, whereas Eppie is the opposite who eats at life, sucks the life out of everything, and is so alive. She forces forward looking thoughts for Silas and becomes a healing process for him to accept his past. Gold asked him to constantly weave and be isolated, Eppie reawakens his senses with life and gets him out to meet people and brings him back to life ââ¬â she resurrects him. Eliotââ¬â¢s use of contrast emphasizes the effect of Eppie on Silas. ââ¬Å"As the childââ¬â¢s mind was growing into knowledge, his mind was growing into memory: as her life unfolded, his soul, long stupefied in a cold narrow prison, was unfolding too, and trembling gradually into full consciousness. This suggests that as Eppie grows, Silasââ¬â¢ mind begins to except his cold past and regain full life into him. Dolly tries to make Silas punish Eppie for running away, but although at first he is adamant he never will, he agrees to because the thought of her running away petrifies him. Silas put Eppie in the coal hole but the punishment ended as soon as she cried ââ¬â the form of discipline faile d because he simply canââ¬â¢t bear to harm Eppie. There is no repulsion to Silas when with Eppie, and it shows that money doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily bring happiness. Godfrey believes itââ¬â¢s easier to hide behind the inconvenience of her mother dying in the snow than taking responsibility. This is made easier because the Squireââ¬â¢s family is respected and nobody would think anything disrespectful or salacious such as the unfolded events that happened ââ¬â nobody suspects these untoward things. In part two of the novel, we learn that Godfrey believes he has a god given right over Eppie and suddenly wants her back because Nancy canââ¬â¢t have children of her own. I believe Eliot wrote the book in two parts simply too emphasize the growing up of Eppie over sixteen years, and so as a reader we can grasp what changes and similarities come about because of this. The tone of the story is sympathetic to each characterââ¬â¢s story, revealing in depth emotions and the relationship between parent and child. When Eppie asks if ââ¬Å"God would like me to be married, sir? â⬠, Silas although has no views over marrying within class, does doubt the value of his love to Eppie. ââ¬Å"Things will change; whether we like it or no; things wonââ¬â¢t go on for along while just as they are and no difference. This suggests that Silas knows that the marriage between Aaron and Eppie will change things between them, although Eppie claims he will live with the both of them. The relationship between Eppie and Silas is really tested when Godfrey turns up wanting his child back after refusing to have anything to do with her for 16 years. The villagers feel â⠬Å"itââ¬â¢s natural he should be disappointed at not having any childrenâ⬠, however I think that to shirk his responsibility for 16 years then demand Eppie back now that sheââ¬â¢s grown up is wrong. Nancy feels that ââ¬Å"to adopt a child because children of your own had been denied you, was to try and choose your lot in spite of Providence. â⬠This means that Nancy believes that if God chose for her not to be able to conceive, it was wrong to try and adopt a child to replace this loss. However, when Godfrey reveals all to Nancy about his past and affair, and how Eppie really is his, she feels itââ¬â¢s his duty to look after Eppie and Nancy feels it will bring the two of them closer, with her ultimately getting her child. For Nancy to just forgive Godfrey and not leave him shows the trust between them, although the grief from being unable to have children is replaced by the concept that they can just take Eppie away from Silas. Silas allows Eppie to speak for herself and choose who she wants to live with ââ¬â the choice between money, or human decency and relationships. This shows that Silas trusts Eppie will make the right decision with her life and what she feels is right, he places all his faith in Eppie to do the right thing. When Eppie chooses to stay with Silas in the ââ¬Å"idyllic and happyâ⬠cottage, far away from having to be a lady and wealth, the true colours of their relationship is shown. Eppie is Silasââ¬â¢ salvation, and he learns to trust her with all his heart, and she later redeems him by him having faith in her. This is an example of a tight knitted and loving bond ââ¬â the relationship between Eppie and Silas is relentless to any outsider, and they both have this perfect trust and love in which they place in each other. This is very different to every other character in the book. For example, the relationship between Squire Cass and his sons is totally the opposite ââ¬â he believes money solves absolutely everything, and just as Godfrey copied, they both shirk their responsibilities which leads to devastating events. Molly Farran has no bond with her child at all ââ¬â she never paid her attention or love, which Silas redeems Eppie in a sense as he gives her what she had always lacked. In conclusion, I believe that children did bring some hope and forward looking thoughts to some of the characters in the novel, and to others they got what they deserved. The effect of Eppie on Silasââ¬â¢ life is profound, she definitely brought forward looking thoughts, however, Dunstan and Godfrey certainly didnââ¬â¢t for their father because he simply had no interest in them. The sadness over the incapability of Nancy to conceive is weighed out by Godfreyââ¬â¢s actions, and so they didnââ¬â¢t deserve forward looking hopes from a child, which is exactly what they got.

Jeremiah Johnson essays
Jeremiah Johnson essays Without a doubt the greatest western/pioneer movie ever created is Jeremiah Johnson. This movie shows hardships that American frontiersmen encountered as they traveled west into new land. Jeremiah Johnson, portrayed by Robert Redford, is a man that has been soured by society and civilization and decides to make his life as a mountain man. He sets off into the mountains with only a rifle, horse and mule, and the clothes on his back in an attempt to survive the harsh wilderness that very few live in. Jeremiah Johnson gets back to nature in a way no film has ever before or done since. The movie begins in the mid 1800s with a clean-cut, young soldier, Jeremiah Johnson, leaving military service after the Mexican American War. As he sets out into the Rocky Mountains he encounters struggles that would kill most men. His attempts to feed himself by hunting and trapping fail him and he nearly starves to death. When he tries to catch fish he falls into the river in the middle of winter and gets completely soaking wet. While he is trying to light a fire to keep himself warm and dry off his clothes a huge snowstorm suddenly appears and dumps snow all over his fire. Luckily he comes upon an old trapper named Bear Claw (Will Greer) that takes him to his cabin and gives him food and shelter. Bear Claw takes Jeremiah Johnson out in the wilderness with him over the next couple weeks and teaches him the basics on how to survive in the unforgiving mountains. He shows him how to trap and clean animals hides, salt meat, and build make-shift shelters. One of the strong points on this movie is its realness. The characters talk, act, and present themselves just as someone would at around the mid-1800s. There dialect and sayings make it very believable. For example at the beginning Jeremiah says just where is it, I could find bear, beaver, and other critters worth cash money when skinned. Eve ...

Naval Hospital Guam Facility Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Naval Hospital Guam Facility - Case Study Example Naval Hospital Guam 2006). My search has so far brought up the general quality management program for the Department of Defense but no specifics on this particular facility. I have been unable to identify a comprehensive Quality Assurance Program document online for the Naval Hospital Guam. The tasks of the Data Quality Analysis and Evaluation Division, the closest thing to Quality Assurance, is as follows: "Administers, coordinates and analyzes a variety of statistical data, to include: Medical Expense and Workload (MEPRS); Clinical workload data (both inpatient and outpatient); and Utilization Reporting for use by the command and higher authority. Provides guidance to work centers in developing statistical data collection techniques; and conducts training to familiarize personnel with statistical data reporting and requirements, and the impact on financial and manpower resource allocation"(U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, 2008). In connection with TRICARE, there was reference to the 1998 document from the Assistant Secretary of Defense. The Department of Defense (DoD) Utilization Management (UM) Policy for the Direct Care System provides a framework for systematic business and clinical processes. Regional UM and Quality Management processes are developed at the Lead Agent level. The Lead Agent establishes joint plans with the Managed Care Support (MCS) Contractors. The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) standards or the Joint Committee on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHCO) standards provide the basis for the flexible development of processes which are multidisciplinary, cost efficient and designed to optimize patient care (Assistant Secretary of Defense, 1998). The goals and objectives include attention to the cost efficiency, timeliness and quality of care as well as the optimal partnership with MCS Contractors. Process performance, process improvement and system improvement a nalysis are an integral part of the plan and appropriate measurement and statistical methods are included in the plan. Key elements of the plan are education, utilization review, demand referral management, case and disease management, discharge planning and health promotion. These provide a basis for the evaluation of care and the development of best practices including practice guidelines, critical pathways and critical outcome studies. TRICARE has developed a Provider Handbook by Region to supply information on key operational aspects of the program and program options. Mandated Requirements: According to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (1998), integration of UM in the Direct Care System (DCS) with the contractor's network, other regional Military Treatment Facilities (MTF),

Describe and analyze how African Americans responded to both the ideas Essay
Describe and analyze how African Americans responded to both the ideas and the actions that leading to the American Revolution - Essay Example The principle of freedom attracted the blacks to the cause of the American Revolution (Kaplan and Kaplan 3). Since both Britain and America offered ââ¬Å"freedom,â⬠the blacks chose the parties that made the best and fastest proposals, not knowing that they would renege on their promises. The African Americans responded to the ideas and actions that led to the American Revolution by publishing literature works, joining the protests against the additional taxes on Americans, demanding freedom and equality, negotiating terms of freedom, bringing their cases to courts, and soon, supporting either the British as loyalists, or the Americans as patriots, during the American Revolution. Literature helped African Americans express their sentiments regarding slavery, although as slave/writers, they hid their messages under religious terms. Jupiter Hammon is considered as the first Black writer to publish in America (Reuben par. 1). His works appeared religious only, but they also dealt with the themes of race, slavery, and the isolation of slaves from the whites (Reuben par. 1). During this time, slaveholders had the responsibility of approving and editing the works of their slaves, and so Hammonââ¬â¢s careful use of words with double meaning underscores his ability to exploit literature as a means of expressing his indignation against social injustice because of racial discrimination (Reuben par. 1). In Hammonââ¬â¢s poem, ââ¬Å"An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ, With Penitential Cries,â⬠he stresses that only Jesus Christ can save humanity. His religious exhortations most probably pleased his master so well without recognizing that Hammon also demands the salvation of his enslaved race. After establishing that Jesus is salvation, he says: ââ¬Å"Dear Jesus, we would fly to Thee,/And leave off every Sinâ⬠(3.1-3.2). In other words, he is saying that blacks can receive salvation or freedom through religion too. Hammon compares the captive spi rits of Christians and slaves in discreet terms: ââ¬Å"Salvation now comes from the Lord,/He being thy captive slaveâ⬠(8.3-8.4). He believes that the Lord will grant salvation even unto slaves. When Hammon speaks of hunger for faith, he connotes the hunger for freedom too: ââ¬Å"Ho! every one that hunger hath,/Or pineth after me,/Salvation be thy leading Staff,/To set the Sinner freeâ⬠(16.1-16.4). He asserts that whites and blacks are all sinners and will equally be freed by Godââ¬â¢s mercy. Before Hammon ends his poem, he underscores the equality of all, because Christ does not choose who to save among all His children: ââ¬Å"Salvation high and low;/ And thus the Soul on Christ rely,/ To heaven surely goâ⬠(18.2-18.4). High and low means all races, and they will all go to the same paradise, if they cannot get this paradise in America. Another slave, Phillis Wheatley, takes literature as a means of expressing her thoughts on racism and freedom. In her poem, â â¬Å"An Elegiac Poem, on the Death of that Celebrated Divine, and Eminent Servant of Jesus Christ, the Late Reverend, and Pious George Whitefield,â⬠she slowly shifts the pronouns used to transfer American citizenship to all, including slaves. At first, she says ââ¬Å"When his AMERICANS were burden'd soreâ⬠(line 15). Later on, she states: ââ¬Å"Great COUNTESS! we Americans revere/Thy name, and thus condole thy grief sincereâ⬠(45-46). By choosing the first plural person ââ¬Å"we,ââ¬
